Li Xiaodong coach discussing table tennis serve video English translation/summary

2015, World Hopes week Educational Session

serve is the only technique, which is entirely controlled by the server. It is used 50% of time in match. It is very important

Serve has 3 priorities: earn point directly from serving, create opportunity for 3rd ball attack, create rallies which is advantageous for server
Bad serve can allow receiver to perform 2nd ball attack. As receiver’s backhand flick technique matures, neutralizing backhand flick become priority for server. Personally, I believe best way to neutralize backhand flick is to use high-toss, spin-no-spin, and soft (ball which do not have forward momentum, thus requiring receiver to generate own power) serves. These serve work better againt backhand flick than low-toss, side-spin and hard (ball which have more forward momentum) serve.

There are 3 type of serves: side-spin (side-top, side-under), spin-no-spin, long and fast serve. Almost all serves can be catagorized into these 3 catagories

serve must be incorporated with 3rd-ball attack. Typically, people with strong forehand serve from backhand corner, to allow for easier 3rd-ball forehand attack. People with balanced forehand and backhand attack can serve from more central position with-respect-to table, so he can attack 3rd-ball with either forehand or backhand with advantage being not much movement required. In this case, reverse pendulum serve can be effective.

To generate spinny serve, hand and finger must be able to generate power. In shakehand hold case, grip may need to be adjusted. Body need to also generate power, being slightly tense, but not too tense. Forehand, hand and finger need to relax before suddenly becoming tense at the moment of contact with ball. Generate power by rotating body and arm to cause center of mass to move from back to front. When enough power is generated, you will feel as though paddle is flying out of hand due to power generated. Keeping paddle closer to body is also important. The most important of all is contactig the ball at the right moment and location after the ball is tossed and falls down, such that the momentum of ball falling down is combined with server’s generated power.

First bounce of long serve is close to server’s table edge and first bounce of short serve is closer to net

More advanced player such as Waldner can generate explosive power on any serve

Do not blindly repeat serve when practicing, but think about the technique when serving. A great Chinese player can serve short and long serves with both first bounce near end of table, which is really difficult, but it cause receiver trouble judging where serve will land.

Great players such Waldner and Liu Guoling can serve side-topspin such that the ball do not bounce up as highly after serve’s second bounce by adjusting center of mass and using hand and finger to generate spin

Serve deception is important, ie, use similar movement to generate different spin. For example, when serving side-under spin, after contacting ball, rotate paddle up to generate the appearance of side-top spin. When serving side-top spin, after rotating paddle up to generate side-top spin, move center of mass and hand down to generate appearance of side-under spin. As long as movement is fast and similar, opponent cannot determine which spin

Ball movement speed is important, ie, in case of spin-no-spin, spinny serve will move faster due to spin compared to no-spin serve. Making ball movement speed similar, regardless of spin, is important for deception.

Serve variation is important. One is spin variation (side-top, side-under, spin, no-spin). Other is serve location (backhand, forehand, middle, short, long). Serve type variation is important (forehand serve, backhand serve, tomahawk serve, high-toss, low-toss). Serve tactical change, ie, serve forehand short under-spin, then 3rd-ball forehand attack, combined with backhand fast-long serve then 3rd ball attack
